CAU Prom 2012 “Make It Last Forever” June 22nd, 2012

Helping Hands, Community Access Unlimited Self-Advocacy group, sponsored its 5th annual Senior Prom on June 22nd, 2012 at the Peterstown Community Center in Elizabeth, NJ. This year’s theme was “Make It Last Forever” as voted by members within the Helping Hands committee. The idea behind the theme is to cherish the good times with friends and significant others, so we can reflect upon these memories in the future. Over 100 members and staff attended this year’s prom, as everyone was decked out in prom dresses and black-tie suits with spiffy shoes.

The prom began around 5:30 pm where members were greeted by staff upon walking in, along with a snapshot photo that will be used for their party favors, magnetic photo frames. Once everyone arrived and settled in, members let loose on the dance floor. Everyone was having a great time and staff and members alike were sharing laughs.

A very special moment was shared during the prom, as our fellow advocates and members of the Helping Hands committee, Sid Katz and Myrta Rosa announced to the crowd that they are officially engaged! Sid actually popped the question earlier that day but their announcement to staff and members sealed the deal. It was a very joyous moment as Sid and Myrta have been in a relationship for quite some time.

This event was truly a success considering the turnout along with contributions and efforts made by staff. The Helping Hands committee is always searching for new ways to get members involved, enjoy themselves all while supporting its advocacy efforts. Check out the photos below to see what we mean!
