Community Access Unlimited hosted its annual Couples Night celebration for the tenth time on March 30th, 2012 at the Suburban Country Club in Union, NJ. This is an event that members particularly look forward to as it is a night designated for those in the community to celebrate their love and happiness. This event tends to have a sufficient turnout as 22 couples came together this year to eat great food, dance the night away, take pictures, and socialize with their friends and CAU staff.
This year’s event was a New Orleans theme as the banquet hall was decked in Mardi gras colors, party favors, tableware and more. CAU member and advocate, Mark Bloom was especially pleased with theme as he said that it reminded him of a time where he visited New Orleans for a self-advocacy conference. His wife, Marcella, explained that she and Mark have been attending this event for the past two years and they hope CAU continues its ten year tradition.
Long-time friends of Mark and Marcella, Sid Katz and Myrta Rosa were happy to spend time with all of their close friends who are couples. Myrta says she highly recommends this event to other members in the community who have significant others because it’s a great way to meet new people and get involved in different activities. Myrta says she thinks that this event will become more popular in the future and that CAU may need to utilize a bigger space for all the couples so everyone has room to dance all night!
Some of the couples who attend this event have been happily married for many years. For instance, Debbie Jenkins and James Williams married 18 years; look forward to nights like these as it is an extension of celebrating their anniversary. Debbie says that she and James are looking forward to partaking in this event next year and hope that CAU coordinates many more activities in the future that honor and celebrate CAU couples.
